They ask, “What is the role of the media?” Honestly, I don’t know.
What I do know is that the media serves people from all walks of life, from the unborn to those who are 200 years old.
Interestingly, some of the very individuals who have benefited from the media and reached significant heights in their careers, particularly politicians, are often the most likely to criticize it. This is a normal aspect of human nature.
While we agree that the media and journalists can’t always get it right, there needs to be a better way to foster dialogue when they make mistakes.
As we observe World Press Freedom Day on May 3rd, we must remind ourselves of the various threats to the media.
The threat to the media is not only when journalists are assaulted or abused; a quiet threat exists when institutions refuse to implement or support media projects that are in the public interest. This includes documentaries, investigative reports, or any piece that seeks solutions to pressing problems.
This apathy or arrogant neglect from authorities is a subtle form of inertia that inhibits some journalists. It becomes a disincentive for those who make sacrifices yet see little return for their efforts.
The public benefits only when the valuable work of the media is put into action, not just when they hear about it.
On this World Press Day, let us declare: Never Again to all forms of threats to the press. Enjoy your freedom.
